On September 23, the 10th International Conference on Contemporary Problems of Architecture and Construction was held at Daxing Campus of Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture (BUCEA). Over 100 scholars and graduate students from China, Armenia, Russia, Poland, Georgia, the United States, France, Australia and Austria participated in the event, including Nie Jianguo, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Professor of Tsinghua University, Professor Mikhail Guzev, Director of the Institute of Applied Mathematics of the Far East of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor Gagik Galstyan, President of the Armenian National Architectural University, Professor Marine Ghazaryan, Vice President of the Armenian National Architectural University, Professor Irina Lugovskay, Vice President of the Saint-Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Professor Gela Kipiani, Vice President of the Georgian Aviation University, Professor Jaroslaw Rajczyk, former Dean of the Czestochowa University of Technology in Poland, Professor George Sih from the Lehigh University in the United States, Professor Freidin from the Saint-Petersburg State Polytechnic University, Professor Arcady Dyskin from the University of Western Australia in Australia, Professor Wu Wei from the Vienna University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Austria, etc. Leaders of BUCEA including Zhang Ailin, Wang Su, Zhang Dayu and Li Aichun attended the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was hosted by Professor Qi Chengzhi, Executive Vice Dean of the Graduate School and Dean of the School of Civil and Transportation Engineering.
Zhang Ailin delivered a passionate and inspiring speech. He briefly introduced the latest progress and future development goals of the BUCEA in recent years in areas such as talent training, scientific research, social services, and cultural heritage, and elaborated on the new round of urban planning and construction in Beijing, the preparation for the 2022 Winter Olympics and other major projects, as well as the transformation and upgrading of the national construction industry that have raised new scientific and technological issues for architecture and civil engineering disciplines. Zhang Ailin believed that, in a world of multipolarization, economic globalization, social informatization and cultural diversification nowadays, international exchange played a significant role in enhancing the cultivation of talents and scientific research of colleges and universities, and the event was of great significance to expand the international influence of BUCEA and promote the development of the architecture and civil engineering disciplines in BUCEA.
Academician Nie Jianguo, Academician M. Guzev from Russia, Professor George Sih from the United States, Professor A. Dyskin from Australia, Professor A. Freidin from Russia, Professor Wu Wei from Austria, and Professor Qi Chengzhi from BUCEA were invited to deliver special presentations, respectively. In the four sessions of Architecture and Structural Engineering, Road and Bridge Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Urban Space and Culture as well as Ecology and Culture, scholars from China and abroad exchanged views on the hot frontier issues in the fields such as urban architecture and planning, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, road and traffic engineering as well as architectural ecology and culture in an in-depth manner. Some of the foreign guests visited the large-scale multi-functional shaking table construction site, the new airport terminal building steel structure shrinkage model test, spherical loading device and geotechnical laboratory of BUCEA.

The closing ceremony was held at noon on September 24 in the lecture hall of Beijing Exhibition Centre Hotel. Zhang Ailin commented that in this academic conference, scholars at home and abroad had in-depth discussions and exchanges on highlighted issues in architecture, civil engineering and related fields, which enhanced mutual understanding and also increased the international reputation of BUCEA. He said that BUCEA was in the stage of quality improvement, transformation and upgrading, and in the near future, it would build itself into a high-level, open and innovative university that was domestically leading and internationally renowned with distinct architectural characteristics. Therefore, international exchange should be strengthened. BUCEA will strengthen international exchanges and promote the gradual improvement of the international level of talent cultivation and scientific research by organizing international conferences, building a high precision innovation center and the Belt and Road Architectural University International Consortium.
Later, Gagik Galstyan, President of the Armenian National Architectural University, Irina Lugovskays, Vice President of the Saint-Petersburg State University of Architecture, Jaroslaw Rajczyk, former Dean of the Czestochowa University of Technology in Poland, Gela Kipiani, Vice President of the Georgian Aviation University, and Professor George Sih from the Lehigh University in the United States, delivered speeches in turn. They expressed the intentions to incorporate the Belt and Road Initiative of the Chinese government, to invite more countries to participate, to add new venues, to expand the scale of the conference, to raise the level of the conference, and to make efforts to promote academic exchanges and common progress in the fields of architecture, civil engineering and related fields.
It was decided that the next session in 2019 would be held at the President of the Armenian National Architectural University and the ceremony of flag passing was held. President Zhang Ailin passed the flag to Gagik Galstyan, President of the Armenian National Architectural University.
On the afternoon of September 24, BUCEA organized scholars at home and abroad to visit the construction site of the new airport of Beijing. The foreign guests were impressed by the enormous size and high technology of the new airport! F.Perov, Vice Dean of School of Architecture, Saint-Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, said: “This is the most magnificent project I have ever seen!” M.Bediashvili, Senior Processor of Georgian Academy of Civil Engineering, said: “What a great project created by a great nation!”
