On November 13, the Sixth International Conference on Ubiquitous Positioning, Indoor Navigation and Location-Based Services (UPINLBS) , jointly hosted by Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture (BUCEA) and the State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing (LIESMARS), Wuhan University, and jointly supported by IEE, ISPRS, GLAC and ICAACI, was successfully held at Daxing Campus of BUCEA. Over 230 experts and scholars from multiple countries and regions such as China, Canada, Italy, Korea, Nepal, Japan and Australia in the field of Ubiquitous Positioning, Indoor Navigation and Location-Based Services, as well as teachers and students from related schools of BUCEA gathered together to share this grand international event in the field of positioning and navigation. At the opening ceremony, President Zhang Ailin extended a warm welcome to the experts and scholars on behalf of BUCEA. He briefly introduced the long history of the university, its current development conditions and distinctive features. He expressed that the participating experts and scholars would definitely focus on academic and technical frontiers, keep problem-oriented and future-oriented, jointly discuss innovative positioning technologies, emerging location-based applications and services, propose more innovative solutions and advanced technical directions, and produce more innovative achievements. Meanwhile, it was hoped that the experts and scholars present at the event would provide more guidelines for the construction of disciplines and majors as well as talent training at BUCEA.

The opening ceremony was followed by two main forum presentations. Professor Wang Jian, Vice President of the Conference and Vice Dean of the School of Geomatics and Urban Spatial Information of BUCEA, presided over the presentation. Naser, Academician of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, delivered a presentation titled "Technologies for Navigation Everywhere for Autonomous Vehicles", detailing the most advanced methods and technologies in the field of unmanned navigation, describing the irreplaceable position of INS in the field of unmanned navigation, and highlighting the current problems and future directions of development in the field. Professor Chen Ruizhi, Chairman of the conference, delivered a presentation entitled "Beyond GNSS: Sub-meter Indoor Positioning Using Smartphones", which analyzed the role of indoor positioning and the latest smartphone indoor positioning technology from cutting-edge companies such as Google, Apple and Baidu, introduced various smartphone sub-meter indoor positioning approaches and experiments such as ultrasound, structured light, vision, WiFi RTT and 5G, and presented the latest research outcomes from the State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing (LIESMARS).

The event received widespread attention and active participation of the industry peers in Ubiquitous Positioning, Indoor Navigation and Location-Based Services (UPINLBS), and provided a broad platform for the international positioning and navigation field to display research outcomes and discuss cutting-edge issues. The event consisted of 2 main forum and 16 sub-forums, totaling more than 140 presentations. A total of 33 papers and 99 abstracts were collected at the event. The discussions were centered on 16 orientations, such as "Precision Positioning and Navigation Theories and Methods", "Seamless Positioning Benchmarks and Cooperative Positioning Technology", "BDS/GNSS Seamless Positioning in Smart Cities", "Global Precision Positioning Technology in Complex Environments", "Robotics/Unmanned Positioning Technology", "Human Activities with Seamless Sensing Technology", and "Emergency Positioning and Location Service Technology". These discussions covered theoretical research and industrial applications in fields such as smart city IoT, robotics/driverless, indoor/outdoor/aboveground/underground seamless positioning and emergency positioning as well as multi-sensor fusion. They concentrated on the latest progresses and development orientations of current international research in the fields of pervasive positioning, indoor navigation and location services, and demonstrated the broad prospects of industrial application research in the field of positioning and navigation.
