Beijing University of Civil Engineering & Architecture (BUCEA), which originated from Capital Elementary Industrial School in 1907, got its name with the approval of the Ministry of Education, P. R. China in 2013. It is a multi-disciplinary university focusing on engineering especially known for architecture. The university was approved as a Master’s degree awarding institution in 1986 and a doctor's degree awarding institution in 2018. It has also been approved to establish post-doctoral research stations in architecture and civil engineering. The university has over 10,000 students, including 132 international academic students, 7,713 full-time undergraduates, 2,178 postgraduate students, 56 PhD students and 766 adult education students.
The school insists on open policy and carries out extensive international educational exchanges and cooperation. At present, it has established cooperative and exchange relations with 94 colleges and institutions in 42 countries and regions, such as the USA, France, the UK and Russia. In October 2017, the school launched One Belt and One Road international coalition of architecture universities, in order to constantly deepen the initiative, to promote the infrastructure construction, international talent training, collaborative innovation of science and technology, as well as cultural exchanges along the Belt and Road. Currently 57 schools from 24 countries join the alliance.
Applicant qualification
Applicants for Master’s degree generally shall be no more than 35 years old (as of September 1, 2020) and have obtained bachelor's degree or equivalent.
Applicants for PhD generally shall be no more than 40 years old (as of September 1, 2020) and have obtained Master’s degree or equivalent.
Applicant should be non-Chinese citizens who are in good health and hold a valid ordinary foreign passport.
Applicants for PhD or Master’s degree in architecture, urban and rural planning, landscape architecture or design, should have bachelor's degree in architecture, urban and rural planning, landscape architecture or design.
Applicants for Master’s degree in control science and Engineering or international Master’s degree in artificial intelligence taught in English, should have bachelor's degree in computer science, automation, electronics or electrical related.
Note: Foreign citizens of Chinese origin (including former Chinese citizens who have obtained foreign citizenships, as well as non-Chinese as descendants of present or former Chinese citizens) can apply for Residence Permit in China and register their academic records as international students, only after being officially recognized by National Immigration Administration as foreign citizens. Please refer to the Instructions for Citizenship Certification for more information. Those who are not officially recognized as foreign citizens will have their qualification for enrollment revoked.

Application Procedures
Applicants shall apply online at http://apply.bucea.cucas.cn/ by filling in information and uploading application materials online. Applicants are expected to keep their phones on and check their online application account and emails regularly, as BUCEA’s Admissions Office may contact them when necessary.
Application Documents
Applicants must provide true and correct information in all application documents in the online application system:
1. Application Form for International Students, which shall be completed in Chinese or English and will be automatically generated after successful online application.
2. For those who apply for a Master’s programme, applicants shall submit their undergraduate diploma or submit their pre-graduation certificate (they must get their undergraduate diploma before September 2020).
For those who apply for a PhD programme, applicants shall submit their graduate diploma or submit their pre-graduation certificate (they must get their graduate diploma of master before September 2020).
3. For those who apply for a Master’s programme, the undergraduate students shall submit their academic transcripts during the school year, and the graduated students shall submit their complete transcripts during the undergraduate period.
For those who apply to study for a PhD programme, the graduate students shall submit their academic transcripts during the school period, and the graduated students shall submit their complete transcripts during the graduate period.
4. Study or research plan.
The Plan should be no less than 1,000 words, written in Chinese when applying for Chinese programs and written in English when applying for English programs.
5. Two Letters of Recommendation signed by professors or associate professors, written in Chinese or English.
6. Language proficiency certificate.
(1) Chinese proficiency requirements for Chinese programs
Applicants for courses taught in Chinese shall submit a HSK4 qualification certificate within valid period. Applicants who have taken all courses in Chinese during their bachelor’s degree studies are exempt from the HSK certificate requirement, if proof of teaching in Chinese from the graduated university is provided.
(2) English proficiency requirements for English programs
Applicants for programs taught in English need to submit TOEFL iBT with score of 65 or above, or IELTS academic report with score of 5.5 or above, or equivalent certificate of English proficiency within valid period. Applicants who have taken all courses in English during their bachelor’s degree studies are exempt from this requirement, if proof of teaching in English from the graduated university is provided. Native English speakers are exempt from this requirement.
7. Scanned copy of valid regular passport. The passport should be valid through December 31, 2020.
To avoid bad influences in their registration and application for the Residence Permit in China, foreign citizens of Chinese origin (including former Chinese citizens who have obtained foreign citizenships, as well as the non-Chinese descendants of present or former Chinese citizens) are strongly advised to put together the required documents according to the Instructions for Citizenship Certification before their arrival in China.
8. CV, completed in Chinese or English.
9. Foreigner Physical Examination Form completed in Chinese or English, bearing the stamp of the hospital. Physical examination results are valid for 6 months.
10. Apply for the major of Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, Landscape Architecture or Design, you need to provide a collection of design works or a published academic paper of your major.
Note:
(1) All the application materials in languages other than Chinese or English must be accompanied by the original copy and its notarized translation in Chinese or English. It is advised to have the original copy and its translation notarized at the Chinese Embassy in the applicant’s home country. Please stamp on the edges of all sheets with part of the impression on each sheet if the document consists of more than one page.
(2) Applicants are expected to submit a complete set of application materials and will be held accountable for the authenticity of their documents. Incomplete or forged materials will be rejected.
(3) In general, there is no need to mail original hard-copy materials through courier service. However, under extraordinary circumstances, the University reserves the rights to require applicants to mail original hard-copy documents for further review and identification. No application materials will be returned, regardless of the outcome of the application.

2. English-taught majors:
In order to promote the internationalization process of our school, our school offers the international Master program, which is taught in English only, and recruits excellent international students. All courses of the International Master’s program are taught in English for three years, aiming at cultivating high-level international professionals with good professional foundation and understanding of Chinese society and culture. Admission and Selection
1. Verification of qualification
There will be a comprehensive review of the applicant’s foreign identity, highest degree diploma, academic performance, language proficiency, research plan, recommendations etc.
2. Interview assessment
Schools will conduct remote video interview assessment (ZOOM or Tencent conference) in mid-to-late August for students who pass the qualification examination, focusing on students' language communication, academic ability and comprehensive quality, etc. Please refer to email for interview arrangement.
The best applicants will be selected according to the results of the qualification examination and interview.
Applicants can check their admission results on the school of International Education website (http://sie.bucea.edu.cn/) from July to August. Admission letters and visa application forms for study in China will be sent out accordance with the immigration policy.
Length of program, duration of study and conferral of degree
Doctoral programs: 4 years;
Master programs: 3 years;
Length of study (including suspension of schooling and retention of school roll) : the longest learning period is the learning system plus two years.
Students who complete the credits stipulated in the teaching plan, complete their graduation thesis and successfully pass the oral defense, meet the requirements for graduation, are granted the graduation certificate of doctor or master, and those who meet the requirements for doctor or master degree are granted the doctor or master degree.

3. Medical Insurance: For the safety of international students in China, according to the regulations of the Chinese Ministry of Education and Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, international students are required to purchase medical insurance for an annual fee of RMB 800. Please refer to the enrolment instructions for detailed information of medical insurance.
Scholarships
Students apply directly to the International Development Research Institute of our school. The following scholarships cannot be applied for at the same time.
1. The Beijing municipal foreign student scholarship. Subsidize all or part of the tuition fees of international students who come to or have already studied at BUCEA. The "Special Contribution Award" is used to reward students who have made outstanding achievements in academic, sports, art, cultural exchanges and public welfare activities.
2. The Beijing municipal “The Belt and Road” foreign student scholarship. To subsidize all or part of the tuition fees of full-time undergraduate or postgraduate students from “The Belt and Road” countries.
3. The Beijing municipal “The Belt and Road” national talent training base "Forbidden City" scholarship. Sponsor international students and postdoctoral freshmen from countries along “The Belt and Road” who are directly recruited from overseas to receive full-time Master’s and doctor's degree education at the university, excluding current students. The subsidy includes tuition fees, living expenses and so on.
BUCEA will adhere to the principle of standardization, objectivity and fairness. Scholarship candidates will be selected from the admitted students and submitted to the school and the higher authorities for examination and approval. All kinds of scholarship winners shall participate in the annual evaluation according to the relevant regulations of scholarship administration. Those who pass the evaluation can continue to apply for or enjoy the scholarship of the next academic year. Those who fail the evaluation will be suspended or cancelled the scholarship qualification.

2. Applicants are responsible for the truthfulness and accuracy of the information and documents they have submitted. New students’ admission qualifications will be rechecked upon their entry to BUCEA. Failure to meet the admission regulations for international students or any falsification or misrepresentation will result in disqualification of enrollment in accordance with the regulations of the educational authorities and the University.
